Den Uyl Shows That Rand's Book Is a Literary Masterpiece

“But of course, if individualism really is central to Americanism, then The Fountainhead is the quintessential American novel.” This is the concluding sentence of Douglas Den Uyl’s wonderful discussion of Ayn Rand’s great novel, which has been at the center of the resurgence of interest in the philosophy of individual freedom. Den Uyl shows that Rand’s book is not only inspiring, as art ought to be, and philosophically meaty, as many classic novels surely are, but also that it is a literary masterpiece.
The tone of Den Uyl’s book is important. It is one of understated respect and admiration for Rand’s accomplishment, one of thoughtful analysis rather than fawning praise. Sadly, we have come to expect works on Rand, including the recent movie, A Sense of Life, to be either uncritical pleading on her behalf, with little attention to any possible problems in her philosophy, or angry denunciation, giving her credit for nothing at all, let alone acknowledging any literary merit in her novels. Den Uyl’s gentle but exacting discussion is a relief from such Rand-partisanship and Rand-bashing.
Den Uyl argues convincingly that in The Fountainhead Rand’s literary achievement is extraordinary and often superior to other authors who enjoy such a reputation with the experts. This is not surprising, given that many intelligent and artistically sensitive people have found it easy to embrace Rand as a great artist, not merely a writer with powerful philosophical ideas.
What I found most rewarding is how Den Uyl accomplishes the task of convincing the reader of Rand’s artistry, using example after example to show how well crafted a novel The Fountainhead truly is. For instance, he shows the remarkable complexity of the book’s characters with numerous passages and conversations. Consider this excerpt from one of Ellsworth Toohey’s conversations with Dominique Francon:
“I wonder what you are essentially. I don’t know.”
“I dare say, nobody does,” he said pleasantly. “Although really, there’s no mystery about it at all. It’s very simple. All things are simple when you reduce them to fundamentals. You’d be surprised if you know how few fundamentals there are. Only two, perhaps. To explain all of us. It’s the untangling, the reducing that’s difficult. That’s why people don’t like to bother. I don’t think they’d like the results either.”
“I don’t mind. I know what I am. Go ahead and say it. I’m just a bitch.”
“Don’t fool yourself, my dear. You are much worse than a bitch. You’re a saint. Which shows why saints are dangerous and undesirable.”
Den Uyl then comments: “The point here is not that Dominique does not know what she wants or that she is unclear about her values. She is a compelling mixture of decisiveness and certainty on the one hand and the unconceptualized on the other, as further evidenced in the following passage: ‘Roark, I can accept anything, except what seems to be the easiest for most people: the halfway, the almost, the just-about, the in-between. I know that is one thing not given to me to understand.’”
A great many more such line-by-line discussions fill this little book. The reader is apt to wish for much more.
This book is a bit like a mystery because not until the end does Den Uyl fully reveal his own view of Rand’s novel. Let me just hint that it revolves around Dominique.
I recommend this book not only to those who have found Rand’s work inspiring and philosophically, ethically, politically, and economically fruitful, but even more so to those who have found Rand’s literary skills lacking or simply accepted the judgment of detractors who speak with confidence but have scarcely read her fiction.
To thousands of champions of individualism, Ayn Rand has been a seminal figure. Den Uyl’s book teaches them—and anyone else willing to listen—how to fully appreciate The Fountainhead and to see why it is perhaps the American novel of the twentieth century.

woohoo guys, its finally here! Ripoffgu….sorry, “freeadguru” Stephan Ducharme – you know the ripper, he’s the scammer with just about the worst reputation on the internet – has his new “amazing” site up and running – uvioo.com right from the get-go its scam scam scam as he promises free cash to refer people on his youtube clone like website. Can you say Madoff? And this time, he’s teaming up with another young soon-to-be con man just like him, Michael Menard.
Basically, his uvioo website works by asking its visitor 39$ per year to make 7$ per referral. As you may already know, this practice is called a Ponzi since he uses other people’s money to pay his member’s commission. And it all goes back to the same old pyramid scheme we all saw people lose cash into.
I’ve bought stuff from this guy before, when I didn’t know he was a bullshitter. His e-book “how to get 1 million visitors to your site” has had lots of reviews saying it is over-hyped trash with nothing new in it. His “my affiliate finder” software spams newsgroups and never gets you any hits on your site anyway.
And to cap it all, they don’t do refunds. There are posts everywhere on the net about refund requests being ignored (I got mine direct from click bank though!).
They also phone you shortly after you order something and put on a very hard sell which results in you handing over credit card info and $1000′s in some cases. I somehow got tricked into giving them $1005. When I realized it was all a big con I rang them and for a week they dragged out giving me a refund without actually saying no, so I gave up and got Mastercard on to it. Thankfully a month later they got me a refund of the full amount. But obviously others won’t have been so fortunate.
So, DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT get involved with this new site he has. But do look at it for your own amusement as its just the same old BS promising the moon on a stick. :rolleyes:

I live in Argentina. I discovered Ayn Rand when I was browsing YouTube. I listened to some paragraphs taken from her books. I said to myself: how is it possible that I never heard of this woman? Who did it? You cannot hide such a mountain without an active effort. I knew lots of names of good and of bad writers and thinkers, but I had never heard of her. Since then, I have read all her books, and my admiration is even greater than when I first heard about her. And I am still astonished by the fact that most people (at least here) have no idea about her. But now I know more about the reasons for that ignorance. I remember a literature teacher sneering at her, and saying that Rand’s was not even bad literature. She had not read any of Rand’s books. I had to deceive her when she made some comment assuming that Rand had written all her books while living in the Soviet Union. She knew nothing about her, just the essential: that you have to sneer at her.

Also, this app downloads a huge amount of data, storing it all on the SD Card. That is to be expected, but I encountered some problems with the download process. The Settings area has two options: download the data as needed (which works well provided that you have a data connection), or download and sync the entire database. When I selected the option to download the entire database (Wi-Fi is recommended for this task), the app hung and never completed the download. Let’s hope that this issue will be fixed in an update.

Необходимо отметить, что практика подобного применения закона распространена слабо, но мы связываю это просто с недостаточной юридической культурой отечественного бизнеса и культурой партнерства.
Ситуация 2. пара партнеров по ООО создали бизнес, вложили в него немалые монета на закупку оборудования, аренду и ремонт помещений, рекламу, найм персонала и т.п.
Прошло пара года. Бизнес развивался никак не так спешно и успешно, как будто того хотелось бы. И 1 из партнеров решил выйти из него. Имеет право и Закон на его стороне:
Статья 26. Выход участника общества из общества
1. Участник общества вправе в любое пора выйти из общества независимо от согласия других его участников либо общества.
2. В случае выхода участника общества из общества его доля переходит к обществу с момента подачи заявления об выходе из общества. При этом общество обязано выплатить участнику общества, подавшему заявление об выходе из общества, действительную стоимость его доли, определяемую на основании данных бухгалтерской отчетности общества за год, в течение которого было подано заявление об выходе из общества, либо с согласия участника общества выдать ему в натуре имущество такой же стоимости, а в случае неполной оплаты его вклада в уставный капитал общества действительную стоимость части его доли, пропорциональной оплаченной части вклада.
3. Общество обязано выплатить участнику общества, подавшему заявление о выходе из общества, действительную стоимость его доли или выдать ему в натуре имущество такой же стоимости в течение шести месяцев с момента окончания финансового года, в течение которого подано заявление о выходе из общества, если меньший срок не предусмотрен уставом общества.
Действительная стоимость доли участника общества выплачивается за счет разницы между стоимостью чистых активов общества и размером уставного капитала общества. В случае, в случае такой разницы недостаточно для выплаты участнику общества, подавшему заявление об выходе из общества, действительной стоимости его доли, общество обязано уменьшить свой уставный капитал на недостающую сумму. http://vk.com/id118785613
