An easier - and proven - way to do this is to include mandatory health coverage in income taxes.

Most of Europe has income tax, health tax (called "insurance"), and "social insurance" (which includes pension and unemployment tax/insurance bundled. Expect it soon, too.

pdh - Have you heard of the Fund for Personal Liberty? They are a 501c3 suing HHS. The plaintiffs want to opt out of Medicare precisely because they prefer their existing healthcare arrangements but the government POMS say that if they opt out they also have to forfeit all future social security payments and reimburse the government for social security payments already received.
What a wonderful essay, and spot on. However, as I approach my 65th birthday, I suddenly find that the government has ALREADY a mandate in place that I buy a product: Medicare. When I hit 65, I will be forced to pay a monthly premium for Medicare whether I want it or not. Furthermore, BECAUSE I will now be on Medicare my health insurance company, which I can afford and am perfectly happy with, will no longer insure me and if my doctor does not wish to work for the ridiculous restrictions placed upon him by the government's scheme, I must fine another one who does. BLEAH. Thank God for our federal overlords.

Thanks for the thought provoking essay Mr. Richman! It further corroborates that "political solution" is truly an oxymoron and that political solution is in reality an opportunistic social disease masquerading as a cure.

Oh yeah, I just finished calculating how much more I owe to the federal and local states to pay for all the shit I don't want. Now I can concentrate on resolving the contraction that I must be robbed in order to be protected.

It should also be noted that uncompensated care is a small percentage of the country's medical bill, about 3 percent, according to Shikha Dalmia of the Reason Foundation. A Robert Woods Johnson Foundation study found that emergency-room use did not drop in Massachusetts when RomneyCare (ObamaCare 1.0) was adopted. Massachusetts still has a higher use than the national average. When the ObamaCare subsidies kick in and demand for medical services increases, people may find it more convenient to use an emergency room than wait weeks for a doctor's appointment.

I've read that the use of Emergency Rooms as primary care isn't really caused by the lack of insurance, but is actually a result of having insurance and not being able or willing to visit a physician in his office during normal hours.

Well, now that everyone has health insurance, can't we repeal the requirement that approved ER's must treat everybody, without regard to their ability to pay? Oh, government is so good at tackeling these big problems we face.
Now if they could just takel this situation where auto insurance rates are set by your previou driving history. My friend is a terrible drunk who cannot aford insurance after totaling 5 cars (a preexisting condition). He shouldn't be forced to pay any more than you or me. ;=0
