How safe are these whole body scans? Are we willy-nilly scanning pregnant women, children, men and women of child bearing age, without a thorough test as to the long term safety of this process? Just because it proved safe for mice does not necessarily translate to humans, and it may take a generation to discover the results of such foolishness. Does anyone recall the days when shoe stores sported x-ray machines for the feet? X-rays were considered safe. How about thalidomide, DES, HRT? Want to be a guinea pig? Step right up folks, the TSA will be glad to accommodate you.

Taking off on Jeff Teebken's idea, let people pay $5 or $10 to see the scanned images, and award a $500 prize to anyone who spots an article of contraband. Operator fatigue ceases to be a problem.

Seriously, though, it would be best to hand control of security back to the airlines, and enforce the premise that flying is a privilege and not a right. Let CAIR whine about discrimination all it wants, the airlines will have no legal obligation to adopt any particular policy. Let individual airlines decide how they're going to handle security, and then let individual members of the public decide which airlines they trust to do the job.

If it's no big deal, the screeners' body images should be posted where we can all see them.

Maybe the Feds could compete with the peep-show industry and sell spaces in their viewing booths to smut customers as a revenue enhancement off-set to the cost of the scanners? Sort of like the promised proceeds that would supposedly come back to taxpayers after buying toxic assetts from the banking industry.
