Like part one, this is a really good piece, so we reposted it (with credit, of course) at CampusReform.org: http://www.campusreform.org/articles/so-your-freedom-loving-kid-is-going-to-college-pt-2

Campus Reform is an important resource to know about if your freedom-loving kid does end up going to a less-than-freedom-loving university. It's a source of funding and free support for libertarian and conservative student groups, and also helps students both find others on campus who share their political interests and get help if they're being treated unfairly for ideological differences rather than lack of academic merit.

Right now, Campus Reform is working on a situation at Indiana University where the administration refused to bring libertarian economist Thomas Woods to campus by falsely claiming his academic credentials (which are impressive, to say the least) don't measure up: http://iub.campusreform.org/group/86/blog/indiana-university-40000-for-edwards-nothing-for-free-market-thinkers

I went to a large public university (Univ of TN) several years ago - Econ Major - and even then, I was consistently graded down for my ideology. If I parroted the prof's views, I received A's. When I didn't, B's to B-'s. My writing and the cogency of my arguments didn't change between assignments - just my viewpoints. Other students I talked with experienced the same discrimination. I did find I could speak my views in class, especially if I raised them as questions. (My technique was to ask questions I knew would show the weakness of the leftist position being discussed. Since I knew the arguments on both sides and they only presented a single point of view, I could introduce another point of view by asking questions that highlighted alternative viewpoints - e.g., in the endless hours I had to endure hearing about Marxist Econ Theory, I would ask questions about Austrian theories - although not specifically using the name. BTW - I was always thanked by students after class for doing this.) I found I could do this without repercussions from a grading standpoint, but for writing assignments and tests, I had to parrot the leftist baloney to get A's. So obviously, I wasn't indoctrinated, but I did not find that most prof's wanted to read a cogent argument if it didn't mimic their own world view. They often did not even understand the arguments coming from a different world view - or at least they pretended not to. And sorry to say, the women prof's (I am a woman, BTW) were especially bad about this.

Very good advice about learning how to write and how to present an argument. These are essential to "learning how to learn" which is fundamental to getting an education and keeping it valid over the long term.
