Not only is it more civil, it is more effective. This is good advice for debate among the libertarian set as well.

Well said and easier said that done. Interest group point scoring has a short half-life but good ideas and ethics slowly build up.

Steven, this is a valuable reminder of the type of discourse that will have a positive impact on the future of freedom. I believe that your cautions provide the "defenders" of liberty with an important long-term view which will produce "converts" or "awaken" folks to the concepts of liberty and the freedom philosophy. Thanks for the reminder, since I admit I am easily tempted to be lazy and fall into the traps of not investigating the advocates of an ever growing state and central planning as thoroughly as I should.

Since I think this reminder is so important I have put up an introductory post and a link to your article at http://www.forfreedomssake.com/blog/2009/12/%E2%80%9Cadvocates-of-freedom-should-set-a-good-example%E2%80%9D/

Have a great holiday.

Great reminder/exhortation Steven! It occurs to me that many of us will have opportunities to practice these suggestions with our families/friends around our Christmas and New Years feasts. An entertaining and educational list that goes with this discussion is George Washington's 110 Rules of Civility which is found here: http://www.history.org/Almanack/life/manners/rules2.cfm
Ronald Reagan commented once, “All great change in America begins at the dinner table.”
