Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Hayek endorse Social Security? He also, if I am correct, endorsed the enforcement of the anti-trust laws. In Germany after the First World War, there was first, hyperinflation that destroyed people's wealth followed by a severe depression. Millions of people were out of work, just as they were during the depression in America. Bismark hated socialism, going so far as to throw Socialists out of their homes. He conceived of his system as a way to stop socialism because people become attracted to it when their lives are miserable. I do admire Hayek, but I do think you have to look at Keynes in the context of the times. Communism was a not unpopular ideology and Keynes, I think, rightly understood that the task at hand was to create jobs. Hitler, on the other hand, campaigned against communism but once in power, imposed a command model, not by nationalization but by dictating to the private companies and making them, de facto, part of the state. In all of this, one must keep Brecht in mind when he wrote, "Fill the belly first and then talk right and wrong."
