This article is correct that handouts aren't the way to end poverty, but that isn't the whole story.

Frank was on to something when he wrote: "For without the air that you breath, and which you continually STEAL from this world — because you NEVER PAY A CENT FOR IT — you wouldn’t live for two minutes."

As a Geoist/ Geolibertarian, the affect of natural resource distribution on poverty is important. Henry George's Law of Wages explainds how natural resource hoarders are able to control wages & keep them low. If we were to shift our taxation methods towards only taxing access to natural resources while abolishing all taxes on the fruits of the individual (income, payroll, etc taxes), then we'd see the laborers' influence increase while the influence of the natural resource hoarder would decrease.

Taxing natural resources rather than labor allows better opportunities for laborers without giving them incentive-killing hand outs.

Far from being an idiot, Frank is correct. He has put forth a valid argument using examples we can all agree with.

Others have resorted to name calling.

While I'm not saying I have any answer to fix everyone's lives in poverty, it does seem like we good go about doing things a little more directly. Why can't we take the money being spent in poor areas, and pay the poor living there to clean up, rebuild, and better inhabit the areas? Those neighborhoods whose poor won't take the jobs to fix the neighborhoods don't get fixed. Those who do would be paid at a rate that is above the poverty line and would be improving their neighborhoods, new schools, sidewalks, police, etc. Identify what the neighborhood needs, train the people there, pay them for their training and work, and if they don't show up, don't pay them.

Well Frank is an idiot.
Good article. I'm doing research for a paper and I kind of stumbled upon this page. Government has certainly failed us. Maybe it's time we give that free market thing a try.

Just wanted to let you know, Good, that I'm not fooled by your diatribe here. You view the economic system as means of implementing your moral values. It is your version of Sharia: the Holy Laws of Economics. "Thou shalt work or thou shalt not eat." Behind all your pretended -- or misguided -- empathy for the afflicted is your conviction that you are an Enforcer of God's Will, the dispenser of Holy Reward and Punishment.

But if you were honest, you would realize that you have NEVER paid for the REAL benefits you receive from this ABUNDANT UNIVERSE, and I'm referring especially to the GIFT OF LIFE. For without the air that you breath, and which you continually STEAL from this world -- because you NEVER PAY A CENT FOR IT -- you wouldn't live for two minutes. Doesn't bother your conscience, does it, Good? No, with a clear conscience you write articles about the moral damage done by giving someone something for nothing: Moral Hazard, I think its called.

But maybe you could wake up, Good. Moral Hazard died when Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson bailed out Bear Stearns in 2008 ... or rather, it was revealed to be what it was in reality all along, just a ruse to save the obscenely rich the trouble of bothering about the poverty and consequent human catastrophe a corrupt financial system has caused for the great majority of humanity by maintaining a perpetual state of scarcity in a world where more energy is available to humanity in one hour of sunshine hitting planet earth than all humanity uses in an entire year.

Yea... if we were having this debate in the Dark Ages of one or two thousand years ago, you might be able to make the case that poverty is a moral problem, rather than a problem of distribution of goods & services. But today, in 2010, it's just a criminal problem, and you're just doing your "job" as the crooks' henchman, making sure that scarcity keeps the wealthy overlords in power.

Have a nice day.

Wretched commentary, Frank.

You've obviously never worked directly with the poor, drug addicted, financially stupid, and morally and ethically bankrupt who comprise the vast majority of what we call "poor" in this country. Try rehabilitating even one of these lost souls with a fist full of benjamins and report back to me in a 3 months how they've turned their lives around. But, you won't have to because I can already tell you what's going to happen... Money gone and the poor right back to square one.

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach him to fish and feed him for life.

Now, let me add one more scenario to this sage saying: "teach a man to fish who doesn't want to fish and you'll both starve."

That's what this article is about. True poverty is one of mind, heart, and spirit--the economic poverty that you think can be solved with money is just a symptom of a much deeper problem.

I know. I've been in the thick of this while on the mission fields here in the US. Been there, done that. I speak from first hand experience, including trying to work together with various government agencies and policy makers to solve poverty problems.

So, keep denying human nature, or go prove to yourself one way or the other that you're right. Then come back here and post about your real experience as opposed to your opinions rooted in mythical places like Pandora.

What a pathetic joke this article is. My favorite line attempts to attribute to Michael Harrington "...his personal knowledge that poverty was not an economic problem..." Hah! Poverty not an economic problem? Only a complete idiot could make that statement.

Also amusing that a companion article in this journal makes the case that artists need income to fulfil their artistic ambitions, but the author of this tripe is willing to hold artists, and everyone else, hostage to his primitive belief (which is a mere veil to hide his own self-interest) that economic punishment is the solution to all the problems of personality. Wretched article ... wretched author ...
