Solutions in search of a problem--
The only energy crisis is the one manufactured by our governments overzealous regulations. Not that we don't need any, but it is ridiculous that we are running short, when the country has used up only about 13% of the entire US hyadrocarbon reserves in the entire time we have been a country. And it's been 32 years since the US has built a nuclear power plant, when France is by now getting 85% of its energy from nuclear power. Just not believable that the US can't do as well when the designers of the Renault have managed to do it safely.
There is not any manmade global warming, and no global warming at all for 11 years, despite massive incentives to find any. And the economy mavens would love to justify tying energy efficiency to pollution. All of the high efficiency cars cost massive amounts of pollution to create, and even more to dispose of at the end of their service life. Batteries are nasty. And depend on multiple higher tech systems to not break down in the interim use. The more system complexity, the greaer odds of failure and extra cost.
All of the expected US efficiency mandates will impact global temperature by less than a tenth of a degree by 2050. In the meantime, China is building 2-3 coal-fired power plants a week and has plans for a hundred nuclear power plants at work.
It is not an issue of efficiency. It is an issue of control of the activity and control of the money.
Jefferson said that the way to determine permissability in a free society was that what another person did was ok if "it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."
When they talk about the energy efficiency, if your leg feels ok, then its the other one.
