Because US built its economic strength on protectionism in the 19th century. Because the Asian tigers built their economic strength on protectionism in the 20th century. Because China is building its economic strength on protectionism in the 21st century. Protectionism works empirically at establishing an industrial base.

As per Jane Jacobs, one thing that would help Indiana a lot would be having its own currency. This would let Indiana's exchange rate reflect its industries. Resource extraction requires a vastly different exchange rate from manufacturing.

Sounds like we should also open the borders between all countries. I'd be completely OK with that if it were both directions (I'm a US citizen). If capital, manufacturing and jobs can move freely, people should also have the same freedoms. Otherwise they are assured to suffer the worst from any imbalances.
