Thank you for another informative blog. Where else could I get that kind of info written in such a perfect way? I have a project that I am just now working on, and I have been on the look out for such information.

Today I'm watching the Auburn game. I remembered Clarence telling me his war stories and times at Auburn and Michigan. I was married to Clarence's daughter Melissa for a short time so I had many opportunities to interact with Clarence personally. I can recount a number of friendly mentoring conversations with Clarence. I was young and stupid at the time and searching for knowledge on all of life. Clarence questioned my outlook on life, but never made me feel as unwise as I really was at that time. He was a true teacher and a true believer in America and what it could be. I wish I'd had a chance to know him better.

I read Carson's Basic American Government around 1995. But I loaned it to somebody, I need another copy.

I am appalled at the last commenter's remarks. The G.I. Bill, one of liberals' favorite red herrings, was not contrary to constitutional principles, but a way of compensating those who labored in one of the few legitimate functions of biblical and constitutional government, the defense of the country militarily. He reveals in the last sentence that he doesn't even know whether his remarks apply to Dr. Carson. But there is no place inappropriate in a leftist's mind to try to score ideological points, no matter how tacky, not to mention logically flawed.

For my part, I only discovered Dr. Carson this year, and I wish I had known of his writings earlier. The dearth of this type of cogent, accurate exposition of history, economics, and government is, as Dr. Cleveland points out, desperately needed in an age in which insane deconstructionists and revisionists have seemingly dominated and decimated our traditional societal institutions, particularly in the area of education. His writings are a breath of fresh air and recommitment to sanity and accuracy in these disciplines, and I, having only known of him for less than a year, will profoundly miss him. Thank you, Dr. Cleveland, for an excellent and honorable obituary. I admire your works as well.

Why does Professor Cleveland's obituary of Dr. Carson elide over the means used by Dr. Carson to fund his extensive, 11-year university education after service in World War II? As a tenant farmer's son in his early 20s, having just completed his military service, did Dr. Carson not use the government's so-called GI Bill to pay for his education, at the time when the federal debt was even higher than today as a percentage of GDP? Would the federal government have been able to wage World War II and pay for Dr. Carson's education if his reading of the Constitution had been accepted? Does Dr. Carson's life vindicate Mason's and Randolph's remarks at the Constitutional Convention in favor of the practical need to allow the United States to issue bills of credit? Is the constitutional abuse the wanton use of bills of credit for purposes other than national emergencies? Unfortunately, the Kremlin-like airbrushed silence of this portrait of Dr. Carson leaves these questions standing. I hope Dr. Carson refused the GI Bill on principle or regretted not having done so.

Carson certainly provides an alternative view of history. In many ways, however, I see it as a polemic rather than "history" as it is usually defined.

stumbled upon Clarence B. Carson's work "The Fateful Turn" (1963) at a used book store in Hawaii in August 2009. As I started to read, I was astonished at his prophetic words regarding the erosion of personal liberties. In only the past year, the government has enveloped auto companies, banks, the entire student loan program, brokerages and more, all under the pretense of it was "necessary". Failure must be permitted, and eventually the strong will survive and prosper.

I wish I had learned of Mr. Carson before he passed away, and I look forward to reading more of his works. Count me with Mr. Carson and Patrick Henry, give me liberty or give me death. America's founders are surely ashamed at what we have done as a people.
