I cannot disagree with Horwitz about the impact of the market on the family. Freedom to choose ones course in life based on political, social and market realities has brought us to where we are today, and may well dictate the course of future trends. But the author certainly neglects or ignores the moral aspect of those choices.

Before anyone's sense of indignation rises, I'm not talking about forcing moral preferences across the populace, but there are natural consequences for our choices, whether deemed good or bad. Natural law dictating the consequences of our choices, certain behaviors are not sustainable individually or collectively. So, we may have the freedom to choose our lifestyle, to choose our government representatives, the way we spend our time and money, or the way we manipulate natural forces for supposed short-term gains hoping for long-term benefits (think of the Fed, or the contents of the above article), but in the end there will be a crash. It's simply not sustainable.

PS For a more encompassing history of marriage and the family, I suggest, "Public Vows" by Nancy F. Cott. That book also answers the question of why government got involved in the first place.

Why does the government have anything to do with marriage anyway? It's just one more thing to get its paws off of.

If Sheldon wants to marry Zehava, great, so they marry in whatever manner and tradition they prefer. Government neither knows nor cares.

If Edward wants to marry John, so go ahead. Again, government neither knows nor cares.

No tax penalties or benefits. No nothing. End of problem.
