I am homeschooled, and I am mostly not taught by my mother but my textbook and myself. I don't have any ideas even close to feminism. This article obviously doesn't mean me and all of my other friends out there who are also homeschooled

[...] An article by Wendy McElroy, one of my favorite feminists, in a publication by the reputable Foundation for Economic Education. [...]

I have to admit that I anticipated being opposed to this article but it has adjusted my opinion. Though I am suspicious of the religious zealots typically associated with home schooling, especially in the South, I can see that the lunatics on the other side of the debate are every bit as pernicious. Using White Males as a scapegoat for all the ills on this planet has become tiresome. Several of my family members came over as indentured servants. So what? How my family originally got here is in the past, the question is what I’m going to do today.

I am reminded of Justice Sotomayor’s comment: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." Yet here we are nearly 250 years after a bunch of old white guys lacking the richness of the Latina experience wrote the Constitution setting the foundation for the most powerful, prosperous, advanced, and free nation in world history but this has yet to be duplicated despite the combined wisdom of over 300 million Latinas.

Not bad for a bunch of Old Gringos.

I have recently begun homeschooling my seven year old son. I have a Master's Degree and have really noticed and felt the effects of colleagues' reactions to my decision to stay home and homeschool my son. I am continuing to teach part time online, but the stigma of my decision is blatantly obvious in the faces and comments of many when I explain what we are doing.

I have wondered about the isolation factor for the home educator, and how it will affect me, personally. This article was very interesting not only because it validated some of the emotions and worries I have had, but also because it gives me another view point to consider. Thanks for writing it!
