Quote, form Looking into the future: surveillance globalization and the totalitarian potential, writen by Maria Los, publication "THEORIZING SURVEILLANCE", Edited By David Lyon.
"One of the key conditions of totalitarian domination is social atomization. It entails separation of members of society from each other through secret infiltration, ideological obliteration of tradition, criminalization of association and deliberate uprooting schemes such as forced populations movements, mass arrest and grandiose industrial or military projects.
As my earlier analyses show (Los 2002, 2004 Los and Zybertowicz 2000), totalitarian surveillance aims at a radical destruction of trust. Its key mechanism involves a conversion of every member of society into a police surrogate for both oneself and others. The penetration of society by the secret police and its collaborators, each individual not only views all others as potential spies but must also be aware of being similarly viewed by others. This creates painful barriers of fear and humiliation that divide and terrorize society. People have no way of verifying who is secret agent and have no way of preventing others from suspecting them of being one. The resultant culture of fear and suspicion atomizes society and thwarts social resistance." End of Quote.
Is this not what is happing, the atomizing of society through surveillance, has this not been happing for 40, 50 years or more, Maybe even since 1907, with the beginning of the Bureau of Investigation. This was the first infiltration of American society with secret police.

[...] Have you figured out yet with what to describe your group? OK, with your answer in mind, can that which you describe as “the group” survive without the individual? Also, when it benefits, what is it benefiting outside of the individual? My answer is: nothing, but it benefits some individuals at the cost of other individuals. In our society, this is determined by majority rule which leads more to tyranny than liberty. Here’s an interesting, easy to understand article on this subject: http://www.thefreemanonline.org/columns/totalitarian-collectivism-in-america/. [...]

Great article Mr. Douglas. I think the article could've been made even better if you supported the America's of the 1830's as a happier state with more details. I understand this is difficult since neither of us has lived in that period, but to make a statement like that without cause seems to keep it in the world of theory and not practical application.

I happen to agree with you because it makes sense, but I'd like to be able to support it, too :)
