Let no pleasure tempt thee, no profit allure thee, no ambition corrupt thee, no example sway thee, no persuasion move thee to do anything which thou knowest to be evil; so thou shalt live jollily, for a good conscience is a continual Christmas. Benjamin Franklin

Its all about self discipline not oppressive government

So very very true. Nothing is more depressing to me than when I observe fellow citizens who have lost their passion to persist and prevail, usually the result of being given to much in the name of helping them. Why not help them by not helping them? Transformation is difficult but life without it is pointless at best.

This is all very reminiscent of the EU parliamentary committee meetings I attend in Brussels and Strasbourg. They all want to regulate us within an inch (that's 25.4mm), of our lives. And that is the nation state, not the mere individual. Please don't take my word for it - check out the EU Parliament website for the streaming video of the transport committee proceedings of Tuesday 9 Nov 2010. They positively want to get rid of the nation state, because they know best! Hermann van Rompuy said it for them all very recently too - the nation state is warlike and divisive and has to go!

Well done. I love essays that get at the underlying causes and effects of social problems. I'm also a big fan of AJN.
