Excellent article Sheldon Richman! I wanted to add one point. If government spending created wealth, then we would not have 14.3 trillion dollars in debt. Rather, the debt is more evidence that government spending does not create wealth; rather it creates no "value!"

Another typically excellent article by Sheldon Richman! Destutt de Tracy's brilliant analysis of the effects of coercive State intervention are logical and rational, and subsequent history corroborates it.

I've often wondered about this fundamental statist premise regarding human nature: that by stealing our wealth, and forcefully regulating our actions we will work harder, be more productive, and better off. This idea seems more consistent with the master-slave relationship.

The State (in common with all criminals) is a parasite! The provision of government (services to protect life, liberty, and property) is another matter entirely which is at odds with State purposes and its MO, and more consistent with the voluntary enterpise-market paradigm.

[...] As we’ve seen in the last two TGIFs, Destutt de Tracy, writing (pdf) in early nineteenth-century France, had solid insights about the market process and government spending as a form of consumption not investment. (See “Jefferson’s Economist” and “Government as Consumer.”) [...]
