An excellent essay that gets to the root of things. Here we see the political state exposed as the hired hitman camouflaged to it's victims and clients as a protector! I suppose with such a coercive instrument available there are those who will exploit it's power; especially when it is generally looked upon as a benevolent and altruistic protector which is in reality a protection racket. What a masterful deception where ultimately everyone loses as society evolves into a "free" prison. Changing the Constitution cannot solve this fundamental problem as long as "might makes right" remains the social standard instead of the principle of property sanctity.

Just as relevant an article because people are no different than they have always been and truths about people are no different. The same reason to question the idiocy that the Constitution needs to change.

Totally agree with Iconic Freedom. Great FEE article, with valuable insights for Right and Left; wish I had read it years ago. I would only add that in the 21st century, governments are the willing agents of entrenched Globalist elites (such as the Enviro-Statists), not just the lobbyists for the business establishment.

This article was written in 1980 and here it is 2009 and more relevant than ever.

If groups in society always "feel" that they or others are being treated unfairly, instead of teaching personal responsibility to those individuals so that they realize they have choice in life, they instead want the "offenders" regulated, controlled, and manipulated.

Milton said, "a very famous road is paved with good intentions"

The best gift you can give another person is a job by which that person can advance self-reliance, self-governance.

Each must care for self and all will be cared for.

If a product or service presents itself, it then becomes the individual's responsibility to educate and inform himself before purchasing and using that product or service - not the government.

Whatever the outcome, the individual will be accountable unless a court ruled that the business was negligent by not disclosing all information & potential liabilities.

Our society doesn't lack anything except the further development of personal responsibility.
