I worked in Washington several years and every time there was a snowstorm, I heard the announcement, "Only essential government employees should report for work." As a private sector employee I used to wonder what kind of a person would work hard at a "non-essential" job . . . and what kind of a person would admit they were "non-essential"? Only later did I learn that others made that decision.

I never saw an ill effect from such an event except that the subways went to a weekend schedule and I had a harder time getting to work on time.

It is really no surprise that government is profligate with other people's money. Especially when there is always more to be had when needed. Reference the clamor today to tax the rich more.

Every day the government sheds more light on its inability to govern. We pay for this performance?
