“He couldn’t relax, breathe sighs of relief, or resume living a quiet or anonymous life. He felt compelled to tell his story. Likewise, I will not relax, breathe sighs of relief nor resume living a quiet or anonymous life while Washington DC is allowing boondoggling to be their "modus operandi!"

I have been to Cambodia and seen the killing fields, as well as the notorious prison Tsol Sleng (I'm not sure if I am spelling that correctly). The atrocities committed there in the name of communism and the state were unspeakable and utterly heartbreaking. The moral bankruptcy exhibited by the actions of the Khmer Rouge was complete and unimaginable. To have such a disregard for human life and suffering, I cannot wrap my mind around it. I pray that justice is done in these trials and that these despicable men get what they have deserved for the last several decades.

Why did it take so long to get these guys to trial?

And where were all of these "international saviors," for want of a better term while this madness was going on? What I find most interesting is the almost-as-brutal Vietnamese actually stopped the Khmer Rouge, not the rest of the world. I'm guessing they proved an active threat to their own drunken power-binge (I was a little kid when this was happening, and I'll be the first to admit I haven't read much on this period of history.)

Wow...this really does put life into perspective. Right now, I really wish I was still teaching high school. This would make an excellent article for our contemporary, spoiled teenagers to read.

Thank you very much, Doug, for the kind comments and for helping to promote the Great Depression essay. FYI, you may also enjoy these two inspirational pieces: www.mackinac.org/8160 and www.mackinac.org/7112.

I read this article during my lunch break today and it challenged me to recommit to promoting the ideals of freedom, limited government and private property. Mr. Reed, your statement,

"He couldn’t relax, breathe sighs of relief, or resume living a quiet or anonymous life. He felt compelled to tell his story so others would know what awful things total government can do. He forced us to ponder and appreciate life more fundamentally than ever before." Jolted me into thinking about how we must all do our little part. This "doing something" to protect our liberty is essential, as I know you at FEE know, today more than ever.

I have been promoting your "Great Myths about the Great Depression" on our blog, www.forfreedomssake.com in an effort to educate those folks in my world about the dangers of the current path our politician are taking us down.

Thanks again for this very moving story.
