Yes, … but … whaling in 1875 was not a multi-trillion dollar industry with an army of lobbyists in Washington. If anything, it was Rockefeller who had the lobbyists.

If whaling had a trillion $$$’s in 1880, it would have paid a squad of scientists to declare we would always need whale oil, because the stuff in the ground was filthy dirty and would cost a fortune to refine.

And Rockefeller’s successors are playing that game. Equivalent to oil in 1890 is solar energy in 2011. And the oil magnates are doing their very best to stifle it, and to hang onto their own corporate welfare.
