After receiving a copy of Jones' book in 1977, I tried to read it three times, and found it so difficult to follow, with much of the reasoning so shallow or otherwise obvious, that I skimmed the rest of it. Much better volumes on the subject are currently available. However, an old standby that is much more informative and clearly stated than Jones' is "Mainspring of Human Progress," by Henry Grady Weaver, first published in 1947.
