Oh, and if you found that stuff interesting, you might want to wikipedia Ontario teachers' Pension fund, CPP fund, and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. These are Canadian sovereign wealth funds with hundreds of billions of dollars to keep our pension system sustainable.

Dan Grajczyk :
The Bank of Canada is a Crown corporation owned by Canada. As such, it's indirectly owned by the people (of Canada). The Federal Reserve is a banking cartel whose shares are owned by some American banks. It is indirectly owned by shareholders of some US banks.

Factoid: Of the six big branched banking institutions that dominate in Canada, one is a federation of credit unions.

Also, people think that our currencies are backed by nothing, but that's not true. Since new money is only created when debt is created, they're actually backed by debt paid in the same currency. Its value, instead of coming from a physical commodity, comes from the productive capacity of people who are forced to work in order to pay down the debt the currency represents. Each dollar in your pocket is debt that someone out there is trying to retrieve to pay off (with interest). And its value is the work that person is willing to do to get it from you. The fact that the interest that the debtor needs to acquire doesn't actually exist until new debt is created makes it scarce just like a physical commodity. The system is pure genius. Anyone who thinks otherwise just doesn't fully understand it.

Also, you might find it interesting that our (Canadian) government has tolerated many monopolies, monopsonies, and industries dominated by a few big players (some private, some public). They have been for many different purposes, among which are:
-to achieve the same economy of scale as American companies, in our much smaller market (Air Canada, Bell Canada)
-to cooperatively market goods (like wheat and barley) abroad as a bloc, in order to get the best export prices for our producers (Wheat board of Canada)
-to protect consumers or control consumption (Liquor Control Board of Ontario)
-economic nationalism (Petro-Canada)

I love that our gov't has skillfully balanced state intervention for the common good, with preservation of liberty for individual happiness. Hooray for good government!

Well, it is interesting slice of info, however, Dan was asking WHY our paper dollar is made of air, not backed by precious metals, properties, other properties. And my question again: what pushes, or convinced US Feds to drop backing their currency even after 1947 International Agreement in Breton Woods?

Plus, why would Feds back in 40s remove golden coins and bullion\'s out of public under penalty of law?

I think it is pretty simple: by manipulating air-bubbled paper money whoever owns the Government will strangle people with more and more schemes to scrutinize their own people under.
