<description>For several years now, my aunt, Captain Helen Hauser (WAC) 1946, buried in Arlington Cemetery with full honors, Army Band and all. . . her cousin, Robert Case Martin and several more possible descendants of Luther Martin have been gathering as much documented information as possible that MIGHT show that we are carrying on his ancestral line.

I applaud his conviction that the Virginia Plan would have given the larger states too much power and that equality would not have been served. His stepping forward with integrity to point out to Jefferson his mistakes several times, also is most admirable.

I believe it is a fact that he was born the third of nine children of Benjamin and Hannah (P. Lenox) on February 9th or 20th in Middlesex, New Brunswick, NJ. And that he married Maria Cresap, the eighteen year-old daughter of Capt. Michael Cresap, a Maryland frontiersman from Oldham, MD - and that she and Luther had at least five children. Also, that sadly, Maria died of cancer after a valiant fight in 1796.

I am engrossed in learning about his life, even though, it is very possible that there is no ancestral line at all. My mother&#039;s brother was Luther Martin born in 1913; his father, Luther Martin, born in 1878; his grandfather, Luther Martin, born in 1827 - and so perhaps, those in the generations ahead of me in our family, were inspired to search for a connection.

I am interested in finding out when Benjamin and Hannah, New Jersey farmers, came to America - I saw a date of 1724 - birth of one or the other, but then could not find out where I saw that!!! Also, have you seen in your research a list of Luther Martin&#039;s siblings?

His biography states that he had only daughters who survived.

I am also fascinated by his defense of Samuel Chase and of Aaron Burr. Not only that, but his strong stand against slavery. His life, and work, is a prime example of what freedom is and what America was and is meant to be.

I will try to get your book.

The first officially documented ancestor on the Martin side of my family is Joel Martin, b. 1789 in Bethlehem, Litchfield, CO; married Phebe Moore in 1826.

If you have any information that could help answer my above questions, I would really appreciate hearing from you!
Sincerely.
