Distress Index Updated
FEE updated the Distress Index this morning to reflect the reported increase in GDP during 2009 Q3. As you might imagine the estimated increase of 3.5% in the GDP does not dramatically change our economic situation. GDP is still down -2.3% from a year and many of the gains were driven by unsustainable government stimulus.

The methodology for calculating the unemployment rate has been “adjusted” repeatedly to make one administration or another look better. If you use the current U-6 number of 17%, the index is driven considerably up. A change in methodology only a few months ago caused a .5 decrease in unemployment even though there was no apparent actual hiring going on.
