An Invitation to Authors
We welcome the opportunity to consider thoughtful articles exploring the principles underlying a free society: private property, the rule of law, voluntary exchange, individual rights, morality, self-responsibility, mutual aid, and limitations on power. We aim to publish nonfiction articles that are accessible to intelligent lay readers.
Although a necessary part of the literature of freedom is the analysis of collectivist and interventionist errors, we emphasize the positive case for freedom, using both theory and history. We advocate self-improvement rather than compulsory reform of others. We avoid name-calling and partisan, electoral politics. We do not advocate political action as a cure for problems caused by government intervention. We strive to set out a vision of the ideal free society, leaving transition measures to others.
Preparation:
- Query before submitting articles and book reviews; include a brief autobiographical description.
- Articles should be submitted via e-mail, in Word format. Include the author’s name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and a sentence or two that we may use to identify the author to our readers. (If electronic submission is impossible other arrangement may be made.)
- Suggested manuscript length: 2,000-3,000 words.
- Facts and quotations must be fully documented, with attributions incorporated into the text. No endnotes or footnotes.
- We prefer to purchase full rights to an article, but we will withhold reprint rights at the author’s request. By submitting an article, the author warrants that he has unencumbered rights to it and that it has not been submitted, accepted, or published elsewhere. Authors are paid according to words published, on publication.
Features for the print magazine pay 20 cents per word published, on publication. Book reviews and original website articles pay a flat $100. Website articles published later in the magazine pay $100 on web posting, with the balance paid when the magazine is published.
Articles accepted for publication may be used in various forms besides in the printed magazine, including FEE.org and TheFreemanOnline.org as well as other websites for which FEE or The Freeman may agree to provide content. Articles may also appear in electronic editions prepared for e-reading devices such as the Kindle or other similar devices, and Freeman staff shall have sole discretion in publishing the articles in any other format, print, electronic, magnetic or otherwise, currently known or hereafter discovered.
To disseminate the freedom philosophy to the maximum extent, FEE has maintained an open-reprint policy from its inception.
